Me - My Fees - My Work

Who I am

Picture of Dorreen

My name is Dorreen, and I am a mural artist living in West Michigan. I have been painting anything I can get my hands on for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, but my family frequently traveled to our rustic cabin in Northern Michigan. As I grew, so did my love of nature. With long weekends away from the busy city, I had lots of time to draw and paint my woodsy surroundings. I, in fact, did paint my surroundings: on rocks, driftwood, barnwood and even old bottles.

After graduating from high school, I attended Kendall School of Design. About nine years ago, I painted my daughter's bedroom with an underwater motif. She and all her friends loved it. My business grew by word of mouth. About seven years ago, Abby Construction in Rockford gave me my big break when they asked me to paint some murals in their Parade Home.

Supported by my husband, Russ, and my two lovely daughters (Kristin and Kamee), my move back into the world of art has been both rewarding and exhilerating. Parade of Homes is an annual event, during which several new homes are on display by tour. The biggest and the best in new housing construction and technology is open to the public during this time. These Parade Homes are the shining stars of area building-related businesses.

What I charge

I can evaluate the area you want painted when you call for your free estimate. At that time, you can tell me what type of theme you want, and show me the area where you want it applied. You can either leave the creative portion up to me, or you can give me specifics if you know exactly what you want done. Prices vary, based on the size, location, and the amount of detail you desire. You will find my prices reasonable and affordable. I prefer to get half payment when the contract is finalized, and the balance upon completion.

How I Work

I can usually begin within a couple of weeks, although April, May, and near the Christmas holidays are my busiest times. I work 5 to 6 hours per day, and most projects are completed within a week.

I sometimes begin by placing a chalk sketch on the wall, and I use acrylic paints for the actual mural. A flat finish works best, and I prefer working on this type of surface. Once I begin applying the paint, your mural will quickly begin to take its final form. It's yours to enjoy for years to come!
